THE "FINISHING" OF CARLTON

Carlton was delivered with the hull already primed and the bottom blacked.

Here are a few examples of the finished "fitting out" of the boat interior that has taken place.
Edges and joins between large panels have been trimmed with hand crafted natural oak. After fitting the wood is lightly sanded and lightly "oiled" to highlight the beauty of the grain.
The final finish is attributable to the skill of the craftsmen undertaking the fitting out, and although we cannot over emphasise the the quality of the "hidden" elements that are the infrastructure of a canal boat, the appearance of the narrowboat interior contributes greatly to the cruising experience of our hirers.
You will find other pictures of the final fitting as you look at other pages relating to the fitting out of CARLTON, e.g. the bathroom.
The same skill and care will have been used in all areas to produce the pleasing final appearance.
Note the round wooden plugs that have been inserted in the countersunk holes where the screws are fixing the trim to the underlying batten or panel.

The picture to the right shows countersunk holes still to be capped with natural wood plugs.
Here you can see the inserted wooden plug still standing proud.
This will be sanded to level and then this area of work will be slightly sanded to produce a smooth surface before it is lightly oiled to enhance the grain of the wood
.
The wood plugs being prepared from a number of "off-cuts" so that the best match possible is able to be found for the piece of trim to be plugged.
